Sierra Leone Sports: Kenema amputees battle Makeni in opener of President Bio Trophy

Kenema Amputee football team will battle against Makeni Amputee football team in the Single Leg Amputee Championship 4th edition tagged the President Bio Trophy. Both teams will start the championship on Saturday 18 May 2019 at the KCD field in Kenema and all five amputee teams will compete in the championship, which will end on 24 May 2019. According to the Public Relations Officer, Albert Mustapha, they are going to have a unique opening ceremony that will attract football fans in Kenema and the whole country. He stated the Championship is a tool for community social development implemented by the Single Leg Amputee Sports Association (SLASA) with funding from the government of Sierra Leone. He said this Championship is an attempt to develop the technical capacity of amputee players to compete in international competitions. The President of the Association, Jabati Mambu, said, “Football has the potential of being a viable podium for peace, building up capacities of the youth into core human resources for the development of various communities and the country as a whole.” He said a highlight of the Amputee Football Championship is the selection of the amputee team to represent the country in the Africa Cup of Nations in Angola September 2019. SLASA emphasizes the importance of the amputee football championship and cautioned officials to select their national team on the basis of the physical fitness, skills, discipline and team spirit.
